Will New Yorkers Elect an Actual Threat to Democracy Today?

Here’s the conversation we should be having but aren’t, as we prepare for elections:

The Democratic Party is not just teetering—it’s diving head-first into something far scarier than losing power: redefining what government is. Because this time the agenda isn’t just “can we govern safely or reasonably?” … it’s “how radically can we remake everything?”

Here’s what we know:

  • Mamdani openly identifies as a democratic socialist.

  • His platform: rent freezes, free buses, city-owned grocery stores, $30/hour minimum wage by 2030, and higher taxes on corporations and wealthy earners are classic socialist promises.

  • Support from the more overt socialist wing: New York City Democratic Socialists of America backed the campaign, calling it a “socialist vision.”

  • Fact-checkers say he’s not a communist in the historical sense—yet. But the ideology follows that trajectory and is a serious departure from mainstream Democratic governance.

  • He’s pitted not just against Republicans but against the Democratic establishment itself, which is worried his far-left platform will become a liability.

So yes—this is the party that’s normalized calls for ending the Electoral College, court-packing, riots in response to lawful elections, ballot-box exclusion of opposition, undermining parents, overturning states’ rights—and now you watch as candidates openly trot out structural Marxist-style language under the banner of “affordability” or “economic justice.”

Defund the police? That once sat on the fringe. Now it’s a platform component. And yes—Mamdani discussed reducing policing budgets before pivoting for broader appeal.
CRT/Gender/Queer theory? Radical ideas once whispered—they’re now being normalized and codified.
Education? You’ve seen the teachers on Libs of TikTok; you’ve seen the activism in school boards. The question isn’t if big ideas will change schools—it’s how radically.
Economy? Inflation, redistribution, “government as employer” approaches—not just failings of policy, but intentional redesign.
Immigration? Borderless narratives paired with sanctuary-city stress.
All of this under the banner of “transforming society,” not just managing it.
And yes—the middle? We killed that already. In both parties.

Here’s the deal for you as a voter:

If there are any Democrats left who aren’t radicalizing—they either need to reclaim their party now or step aside, because this train is leaving the station without them.
On the flip side, there is no moderate Republican who can simply say “let’s work across the aisle.” Because the aisle is gone, removed by those who redefined the house.

You don’t have to sign off on every policy. You do have to notice the direction.
Because it isn’t just the policies. It’s the ideology. Our government institutions, the agencies, the elections—they’re no longer being defended. They’re being revised.

And remember:
One side is radical—open about it, explicit in language.
The other side is reacting.
You: the middle? The watcher? You are no longer a spectator.
You are the jury.

Surely, you see this.

New York will it buckle under the scale and scope of Mamdani’s socialist promises long before any tangible benefits will be felt. Nothing is free for everyone. The increase in minimum wage will create a labor shortage by increasing labor costs and shuttering small businesses. His economic policies will incentivize the continued exodus of business and high-income earners who don’t want to foot the bill for all the “free stuff.”

If I were Trump, I would greenlight every bad idea Mamdani has and remove every obstacle to implementation–in hopes that the socialist “dream” is realized for the nightmare it is, sooner rather than later. A “New York State of Mind” indeed.
