Mississippi has now passed into law a ban on aborting babies with beating hearts. Life Site News reports the state Senate approved the measure on Tuesday and the governor has now signed it.

Mississippi Republican Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said the new law shows that those in Mississippi value the sanctity of life and noted “A beating heart clearly means life has begun and should be protected."

The bill does allow for exceptions only to save a woman’s life or prevent harm to a “major bodily function.”

Those who violate the abortion ban could have their medical licenses suspended or revoked.
