Democrats introduced legislation Tuesday in both the House and Senate that would repeal the Hyde amendment which bans taxpayer funding of abortion.

Townhall reports Democrat Rep. Barbara Lee introduced the legislation in the House after promising back in January that she would work to end the Hyde amendment, which prohibits taxpayer funding of abortions except in cases of rape, incest or life of the mother.

Lee and Sen. Tammy Duckworth, who introduced the bill in the Senate for the first time, argued that the funding ban limits abortion access for low-income women.

According to recent Marist polling, 54 percent of Americans oppose any taxpayer funding of abortion.
