Something Unusual Is Happening

It is always winter, but never Christmas.  No one dare speak a word against the tyrant ruler of the kingdom.  But eventually the whispers begin, “Aslan is on the move.”  Santa shows up!  The snow begins to melt.  The tyrant witch is defeated.  If you do not know the story, shame on you.  We seem poised at a moment, after the assassination of Charlie Kirk, where there are rumors of something stirring – where maybe, just maybe God is moving in a big way.

John Elwood says, “As The New World Order/Agenda 2030 juggernaut rolls on, the next stop being digital identity and central bank digital currency, it continues in its attempt to crush Christianity.”  OK, a bit conspiratorial sounding, but the essential point remains – Christianity has been under assault for quite sometime now.

On Monday, Jim Geraghty discussed all the people that are losing their jobs for saying wholly in appropriate things in the wake of Kirk’s death.

Back in 2021, actor LeVar Burton — beloved from years hosting Reading Rainbow and his role in Star Trek: The Next Generation — insisted that what many conservatives called “cancel culture” was simply a long-overdue reckoning of consequences for objectionable statements: “‘In terms of cancel culture, I think it’s misnamed,’ Burton said. ‘I think we have a consequence culture. And that consequences are finally encompassing everybody in the society, whereas they haven’t been ever in this country.’”

However you choose to label the phenomenon, I notice that now few folks on the left see the firings and dismissals after Kirk’s death as an example of “consequence culture.”

Why does the word “justice” come to my mind?  A tide does indeed seem to be turning.

But leave it to Salena Zito, the prophetess of Pennsylvania, to see what is happening:

The Sanctuary wasn’t the only congregation to be filled to the rafters. My tiny little country Catholic church was packed in the aisles and at the door. People across X posted photos of their families going to church either for the first time in a long time, for the first time ever, or seeing their own pews filled with people seeking purpose and finding resolve.

Howard said this return to faith may not be just about Kirk, adding that not everyone at their services agreed with all of his politics.

“But the one thing that everyone is agreeing on is his boldness about his faith in Jesus,” he said.

Before Kirk’s death, there was this sense that if you talked about your faith, there would be guaranteed backlash, explained Howard.

“You see this politically. Well, it’s similar when it comes to faith, where it’s like, if I’m open and honest about what I really believe, I will be called a bigot. I will be called hateful. I will be called an enemy of love, and I will be sidelined, and I’ll be persecuted. And that has been the reality for the last 20 years,” he said.

“Well, now what you’re seeing is people who are saying, I don’t care. I’m going to be bold and unashamed,” Howard said.

Which takes me back to the story of Narnia.  You knew the tide had turned when people quit whispering about Aslan and started talking about him – when Mr. Tumnus defied the White Witch – when the denizens of Narnia became “bold and unashamed.”

I am going to be honest, as I started that Zito piece I was skeptical, I thought it was just the story of the latest “hip” church success.  It has been a phenomena for a while now where a church hangs out a shingle and becomes the cool church, burgeons and then fades as the next cool church appears in the strip mall down the road.  But when she mentioned her Catholic church being full to the rafters, well then I knew she was on to something here.

So just a couple of quick thoughts.  Firstly, if your church did not see this sort of post-assassination bump, the time has come for a serious reevaluation of the direction it is headed.  Secondly, this movement started before Kirk’s killing, even if that event massively accelerated it.  I have yet to see any serious analysis on the role the covid response debacle played in it.

Things are changing in the nation on levels far deeper than mere politics.  But the forces arrayed against the change remain strong.  There are many battles yet to be waged.  We should be preparing for the task.
