Feeling lost happens to everyone sometimes in this fallen world. You can feel lost in different ways, such as being unsure or confused about important decisions you have to make, struggling with loneliness in your relationships, or feeling disconnected from God. But when you feel lost, the Bible reminds you that God is with you and has a purpose for your life.

God’s Word is full of promises that can guide and encourage you to find your way forward again. Here are 5 Scriptures to read when you feel lost.

1. Isaiah 41:10

1. Isaiah 41:10

The promise of God’s presence – “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” – Isaiah 41:10

When you’re feeling lost, you’re also feeling fear. You’re afraid of the unknown, of making the wrong choice, or of being forgotten. This verse, which is a direct message from God to you, can get rid of your fear as you think about God’s promise to be with you right here and now. Your Heavenly Father, who made you and loves you completely and unconditionally, is with you. He’s not a distant figure watching from afar, but a personal presence who is closely involved in your life. The phrase “do not be dismayed” in this verse speaks directly to the feeling of being lost. God knows you feel this way, but he tells you not to let that feeling control you. You can trust in God’s power to help you, because you have a personal relationship with him. God not only assures you of his presence with you, but he also promises to strengthen, help, and uphold you.

When you don’t have enough strength yourself to move forward, God will give you the power you need. When you’re struggling to make sense of a situation, God will help you do so. The image of being held up by God’s “righteous right hand” is incredibly powerful. In ancient times, the right hand was a symbol of strength, power, and authority. When you feel lost, there’s no better place to be than being held by God’s right hand, because God has unlimited power to keep you secure in the most challenging situations. When you feel lost, you can turn to this verse and remember that the most powerful hand in the universe is holding on to you!

2. Jeremiah 29:11

2. Jeremiah 29:11

The promise of a hopeful future – “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” – Jeremiah 29:11

God first spoke this beloved verse to the Israelites when they were in exile and feeling so lost that they were also losing their hope. When you feel lost, you can relate to that feeling of being in a place you don’t want to be, with a future that seems completely uncertain. God powerfully declares in this verse that he is working out good plans for you, even when you can’t see what he’s doing yet. God’s plans are “to prosper you and not to harm you,” to give you a future filled with hope.

Like everyone in this fallen world, you’ll still sometimes go through difficult times that are full of challenges. But God is telling you here that his ultimate intentions for you are good. Your life is much more than just a series of random events. God has good purposes for your life, and he is available to help you fulfill your life purposes well. When you feel lost, this verse reminds you that God is working for your ultimate well-being. So, let his verse inspire you to reach out to God for the hope and help you need to move into a better future.

3. Psalm 119:105

3. Psalm 119:105

The promise of light for your path – “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” – Psalm 119:105

When you’re in a dark and unfamiliar place, the best kind of light is one that shows you exactly where to step. That’s the imagery Psalm 119 uses to describe the power of God’s Word, the Bible. This verse doesn’t say God’s Word is a floodlight that illuminates your entire journey from start to finish. Instead, it describes the Bible as a “lamp for my feet.” When you feel lost, you may want to see the way forward mapped out for you clearly for years to come. But God’s Word gives you just enough light for the immediate next steps. That’s because God would rather be your personal guide than just hand you a map. A guide is better than a map, because a guide gives you constant personal attention and direction.

Through the Bible, God gives you simple and practical guidance to start moving forward with confidence, but to communicate with him regularly while you do so. God wants to guide you in ways that build a closer relationship between you and him. God will give you biblical truths to guide your decisions day by day, so you can see enough light to understand what to do next. As you do so, you’ll see more and more light appear on your path, so you can keep moving forward with confidence while trusting God to give you whatever you need along the way.

4. Proverbs 3:5-6

4. Proverbs 3:5-6

The promise that God will clear a way forward for you – “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” – Proverbs 3:5-6

When you’re lost, you might get caught up in worrying that you have to somehow find ways to solve your problems on your own – even though you don’t understand what to do. The more you lean on your own limited understanding, the more confused and frustrated you can become. This verse challenges you to stop trying to figure it all out on your own and to instead place your trust “with all your heart” in the Lord. God is calling you here to completely let go of trying to have all the answers and instead to completely trust him to clear a way forward for you.

God can see your entire path through life, from where it starts to where it ends. He has a much greater perspective than you do, so he can make your paths straight by leading you in the best directions in all situations. You can trust God to do so by focusing every day on what matters most from God’s perspective. The part of this verse that says “In all your ways submit to him” means to involve God in every part of your life – in all your decisions, your relationships, your work, your free time, and more. You may not understand the twists and turns your paths are taking right now, but you can trust God, who is leading you. When you feel lost, the most freeing choice you can make is to stop trying to figure it all out and simply trust God to help you. By giving up control, you can move forward in ways that only God can lead you.

5. Philippians 4:6-7

5. Philippians 4:6-7

The promise that God will give you peace in every situation – “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:6-7

Feeling lost often makes you feel anxious, as well. When you don’t know where you’re going, your mind races with “what if” scenarios. This verse gives you a powerful solution to anxiety by telling you to turn your worries into prayers. It starts with the simple command: “Do not be anxious about anything.” You don’t need to be anxious about anything, because God will fight anxiety for you. The verse explains what to do instead: ask for God’s help “by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving.” You can bring all of your worries – in any situation where you feel lost – to God, but as you do, do so with an attitude of gratitude.

Praying with thanksgiving changes your perspective from what you lack to what you already have. It reminds you that God has been faithful to you in the past and that he will faithfully meet your needs again. When you do this, something wonderful happens: “the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds.” God will give you a supernatural peace that’s so powerful, it goes beyond understanding. This wondrous peace from God stands guard over your heart and mind, protecting you from anxious thoughts in any circumstances. When you feel lost, God’s peace makes it possible for you to rest and trust God, even when the path ahead is not yet clear for you.

In conclusion, the Bible offers you all the help you need when you feel lost. God makes you many valuable promises in His Word because of his great love for you. Reading and applying these Bible verses when you feel lost can help you find the way forward, with God as your personal guide!
